Otis P. Graves Elementary - Mrs. Raymond

Welcome to my learning community!

My name is Luz Raymond and I will be your child’s kindergarten teacher this school year.  Before I tell you about my qualifications, I would like to give you a little bit of background information as to who I am and where I come from.

I’m an only child of a single mother.  I was raised in San Luis Potosi, Mexico from the age of 3 months until I was 12 years old.  We moved to Chicago with the purpose that I learn English and broaden my career opportunities.  My mother always placed such a big emphasis on academics, that going to college and obtaining a post graduate degree was not a choice but an expectation.  I have since learned that even though you do not need a degree to be smart, it is smart to get a degree.  I have been married for 10 years and have an 10 year old daughter who loves to read and write and a 5 year old son who just started kindergarten.  Thus, I can relate with everything that you are experiencing as a parent of a child in kindergarten.

I attended Loyola University Chicago and received both a Bachelor and Master of Arts in Spanish Literature.  I then received a full scholarship for a Master of Science in Elementary Education from Northern Illinois University.  I had the honor to be a recipient of the 2013 Outstanding Teacher Award at Summit School District 104.

My goal as a teacher is to instill in my students the love for knowledge; to help develop critical thinking skills; to show them how to respect themselves and others; and to have a sense of responsibility toward their community.

As a parent, you are my first ally in achieving my goal.  Therefore, I ask that we establish a relationship built on mutual respect and trust for the benefit of your child.

With much appreciation,

Mrs. Raymond
